here is some update from the anti-racism camp in Sicily. The two weeks camp was meant to intervene concretely against the dispositives of migrant's deportation and detention, and very good results were reached. Blockades of the buses transporting the migrants from Porto Empedocle (where they are taken after Lampedusa) to the detention centres in other part of Sicily were organized last week. The actions of last week delayed the departure of the buses and were meant to inform the migrants of their rights.

A riot by asylum seekers, sparked by complaints of bad food, has
caused up to $70,000 damage to the Baxter detention centre.

"Via Corelli” wurde für antirassistische AktivistInnen zum Synonym für den Erfolg von Widerstand, als das Lager in Mailand nach Massendemonstrationen geschlossen wurde. Demonstrationen gegen Abschiebehaftanstalten mit 20 000 TeilnehmerInnen - für deutsche Verhältnisse unvorstellbar. Eine Aktivistin von Ya Basta, einem Netzwerk von Gruppen, die sich mit dem Aufstand der Zapatistas in Mexiko in mehreren Städten Italiens gebildet haben, berichtet von den Kämpfen gegen "Via Corelli” und von ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit MigrantInnen-Selbstorganisationen. Ya Basta thematisiert nicht nur die Lebensbedingungen von MigrantInnen, sondern verknüpft antirassistische Forderungen mit sozialen Fragen und den Zusammenhängen globalisierter Ökonomie. Für diesen Sommer wird sich wohl in Genua bei den Aktionen gegen den G-8-Gipfel eine Verbreiterung der Bewegung und Zusammenarbeit beobachten lassen (s.a. "Aktionen in Genua gegen den G-8-Gipfel”). Die Forderungen von MigrantInnen sollen dort einen zentralen Stellenwert einnehmen, es werden 100 000 Menschen zur Demonstration erwartet. (Red)
